Did you know that the brain and the skin develop from the same embryonic cells-the ectoderm? I seem to remember learning this some time ago, in a long lost A.P. Biology class in High School. I’m revisiting this information now as I’m taking an infant/toddler theory class as I pursue my Preschool Director’s Certificate. Anyway, I’ve been mulling over this fact for a few days now, thinking about the implications it has on human development, and the real physical nature of our beings.
Yes, we all know that if a baby is not held in her/his infancy, the baby will die. Did you also know that human touch is actually vital to the cognitive, emotional, and psychological development and well being of humans throughout their entire lives? (As I write this now my dog, Meegosh, is snuggled up to me- just close enough that typing on my laptop becomes challenging.) Positive physical contact is vital for health. Just notice how you feel after a hug from a friend, or a high-five from a child.
So, my question is this: “How do positive physical interactions play into our spirituality?” We know that nothing happens in a vacuum. All parts of the self are connected. Do you have a story or example to share illustrating this concept?
Peace, Love, and Laughter,
Emily, and Meegosh
