I’ve been a bit of a grouch lately in the mornings, namely when I am commuting in to work. Why do normally kind people become monsters behind the wheel? So, I decided that I wanted to change than. This morning, I began wishing well to all of the other drivers with whom I crossed paths. I would look at the car (and the driver, if they were in my sight) and say, “I wish you well today. May you be filled with loving-kindness”. You know what? I began laughing after someone cut me off!
Normally, a few choice words about the character of the driver would have crossed my lips following such an incident. (I’ll be honest, I spend a large portion of my time holding those words in, because I work with children. I am human, after all.) It felt really good to just laugh at the trivial nature of the whole thing.
We get so worked up about things that are of so little importance. Just remember that it’s your choice to get worked-up about something, the same way it’s your choice to just let go. Don’t believe me? Think about the other driver, person at the grocery store, or grouchy receptionist as one of your beloveds, and wish them well. It sure feels a lot better than cursing at them. We don’t know what they’re going through. I’d rather air on the side of kindness. It’s just better for my soul.
Peace, Love, and Laughter,
Emily
